The all-new Mercedes AMG SL is the 7th generation of the legendary SL lineup. SL is derived from either German Sport-Leicht (English: Sport-Light), or Super-Light, neither the former nor the latter is specifically mentioned as a full-form. Mercedes revealed it with the tagline, “THE STAR IS REBORN”.
Q. What’s so special about it?
Ans. The AMG-SL is made keeping in mind, the structure of airplanes. Even the interior is designed like an airplane’s cockpit with various elements similar to those of an aircraft.
Another major aspect of its specialty is its lightweight structure giving it an edge over its rivals. The luxury sports car is built on a rigid lightweight aluminum spaceframe that has been designed from scratch.
Q. How is the performance?
Ans. The new SL will be launched in several performance variants:
- A V8 biturbo engine with 476 Horse Power (HP)
- A V8 biturbo engine with 585 Horse Power (HP)
According to Phillip Schiemer (CEO, Mercedes-AMG), the SL will later also be available with their Formula 1 inspired hybrid technology, E- PERFORMANCE, which will feature an electric power unit at the rear axle.
Talking about Speed, SL goes from 0-60 Miles per hour (MPH), i.e., 0-96.5 Kilometer per hour (KMPH) in an astonishing 3 and 5 seconds respectively.
Q. What about safety?
Ans. Keeping in mind, the performance, it becomes necessary that it must offer safety as well. So, talking of it, the SL will come equipped with a fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive (AWD) for optimal traction. This is for the first time SL is offering this feature.
Talking about one more safety feature which is in the offering for the first time, is the rear-axle steering. It turns the rear wheels up to 2.5 degrees for higher agility. This feature also increases stability at speeds above 60 Miles per hour (MPH), i.e., above 96.5 Kilometer per hour.
Q. What about the space?
Ans. Mercedes claims that the new space concept allows even more storage at the back and in the trunk. Well, Mercedes claims a 2+2 seating arrangement, but honestly speaking, the rear seats will be more comfortable for kids rather than adults, or can even be used as your storage compartment.
Q. What abut the tech?
Ans. According to Gorden Wagener (Chief Design Officer, Daimler Group), SL is the most digital car they have ever made. The combination of hi-tech and a bold analog appearance gives it tension in its design which Mercedes calls “Hyperanalogue”. You can properly feel the car and still enjoy the digital experience.
You can also adjust the angle of the center screen according to your comfort and also to reduce glare.
Q. How is the design?
Ans. “The design of the new SL embodies the perfect symbiosis between emotional, sensuous contours, digital and analog luxury to create the extraordinary look of the vehicle,” says Wagener. Interior details are inspired by those of airplane cockpits, even the air vents resemble jet turbines.
High-end materials are used and all the elements are seamlessly integrated which is obviously expected with such a car.
It also gets an electrically adjustable rear spoiler.
Q. How are the riding dynamics?
Ans. “With AMG Active Ride Control, the SL gives you amazing command of the road in any situation,” says Schiemer. With the all-new AMG Active Ride Control chassis, the new suspension system reduces body roll thanks to constant adaptive adjustment.
It also gets different driving modes, so that you can select one according to your mood and need, from very comfortable to extremely sporty.
Q. Soft-Top or Hard-Top?
Ans. The SL comes in a soft-top convertible variant which can be opened and closed at up to 37 Miles per hour (MPH),i.e., up to 59.5 Kilometre per hour (KMPH) in just a few seconds.
Q. What are the colour options?
Ans. The company does not specifically inform about the colors they are going to offer in the new SL, but the 8-minute video of the unveil shows it in two colors namely Red and White, while it is still being awaited that what Mercedes names them.
